The Mathematics of Geometric Patterns in the Plane

ID : 816
« back to classes page
The geometric art of Islam, the mind-teasing art of Dutch artist M. C. Escher, the geometric patterns found in tilings, brick-work, Roman mosaics, and quilts -- these all enjoy certain patterns of symmetry that can be analyzed mathematically, helping to bridge a gap that some perceive between art and science.  This course will explore the 17 possible pattern types, or groups of symmetries, that geometric patterns can possess: learning how to recognize them when they occur and how to create new ones of each type.  No formal mathematical prerequisites will be assumed.
