« back to classes page
This course will examine competing ethical theories.  We will concentrate on John Stuart Mill’s utilitarian (happiness-based) and Immanuel Kant’s deontological (duty-based) approaches to creating a moral system.  Time permitting, we will look briefly at related insights from other thinkers such as Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and John Rawls.
