Modern Computing Devices and How They Work

In this course, we will discuss how modern electronic computing devices work - such as laptops, desktops, smart phones and watches, tablets, fitbit, and smart appliances.  All digital devices work on the same fundamental principles.  These principles include the stored program computer, digital logic and transistors, central processing unit, microprocessor, memory, storage, algorithms, communication and control, and interface devices such as display, input, navigation and networking.  These concepts will be introduced in the context of the history of computing devices illustrating the progression from the industrial revolution to present day.  Hardware components from modern computing devices will be presented and discussed.
