James Lawson Kemper became a Confederate colonel in June 1861 and fought during the Battle of Williamsburg in 1862. He was the only one of Pickett’s brigadier generals to survive Gettysburg and was promoted to major general in 1864. He was elected Governor of Virginia in 1874.
