Modern Dance: Ted Shawn and Jacob's Pillow

ID : 735
« back to classes page
In the early 30s choreographer/dancer Ted Shawn took the radical step--literal and figurative--of establishing an all male dance company in Massachusetts.  From this base, which became a self-sustaining commune throughout the Depression, a whole new perspective on the role of men in dance--virile, athletic and vibrant--was provided and shared nationwide through extensive touring.  Documentary footage of the Men's Company will be viewed, plus films of contemporary works for all male casts, a recent documentary on "The Pillow" today and the incomparable Born to be Wild, a stunning perspective on four of the most exciting early 21st century male soloists in the American Ballet Theater.
