City of Night: L.A. Noir

ID : 716
« back to classes page
Film Noir has two great cities, New York and Los Angeles.  We looked at movies made in and about New York in an earlier semester and now we focus on California and “The City of Angels,” a title which, in these movies, could not be more ironic.  Raymond Chandler described L.A. as a city where one could find “a special kind of sunshine” and a “wet emptiness...a big hard-boiled city with no more personality than a paper cup,” “rich and vigorous" and “lost and beaten...full of emptiness.”  In other words, a perfect city for film noir!
