This course will focus on the basics of estate planning as well as more advanced, cutting-edge planning techniques. We will specifically focus on the differences between wills, powers of attorney, revised advance medical directive laws, revocable and irrevocable asset protection trusts. Students will also understand how the use of business entities, trusts, foundations and other legal strategies are used to not only protect assets but also reduce estate and capital gains taxes. The course will additionally focus on elder law and how seniors can protect their assets against the rising and catastrophic expenses of long-term care. Lastly, we will review the differences between Medicare and Medicaid and how other little-known governmental benefits can help provide thousands of dollars a year in assisting seniors in paying for long-term care expenses.
