If you enjoy reading and/or discussing good books with others, you are invited to join me for a discussion of the book Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi. Every Thursday morning for two years in the Islamic Republic of Iran, where all forms of artistic expression were brutally repressed, Nafisi secretly gathers in her living room seven of her most committed students, who risk removing their veils and immersing themselves in the worlds of Jane Austen, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Vladimir Nabokov. In this fascinating memoir, their own stories become intertwined with the ones they are reading. The book is a remarkable exploration of resilience in the face of tyranny and a celebration of the liberating power of literature.
