A Survey of the French Revolution

This course will begin with the causes leading up to the French Revolution to include: the reign of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, the "Ancien Regime," the Estates, the famines, the economic depression and bankruptcy facing France, the ideas of the Philosophes, the success of the American Revolution and the declaration of war against France by other European powers. A chronology of events, a discussion of the many characters and the outcomes of this turbulent era will be discussed.
