Issues in Social Ethics

Discussion is the philosopher’s laboratory. This exploratory activity will investigate ethical aspects of social issues in a guided discussion format. Reading short articles defending various positions on controversial matters will help prepare for the sessions. (Book
below is widely available used online). We will entertain varying responses to social issues, relying on reason and experience to deepen our understanding. Likely topics include Euthanasia, Censorship, Economic Justice/Poverty, Abortion and The Environment. Familiarity with fundamental tenets of Rights Theory and Consequentialism will enhance enjoyment of the class.
