This lecture will explore the State Department and Foreign Service, the career of diplomacy, the work of our embassies and consulates, the difference between career and political ambassadors, and the instructor's 34 year history in Africa and Southeast Asia, including wartime Vietnam. It will assess the decline in U.S. diplomatic capacity and global influence in recent years and examine America's role in a post-pandemic world.
