A wide array of new discoveries reveals much about the beliefs and character of Paul and the gospel writers. Although this new material differs from the tradition of Christian orthodoxy, we nevertheless now know far more about who these authors were, what they believed, and why they wrote. The author of John, for instance, was not the son of Zebedee, as Christians once believed, but he still had ample reason to refer to himself as the "Beloved Disciple" -- an important eyewitness to the events he described. Paul, too, may have had a special secret that shaped the passion of his theology.
