United States Immigration: A Historical Perspective

ID : 1154
« back to classes page
Past legislation, executive decisions and historical narratives shed light on how, as a nation, we have responded to the relocation of individuals from other lands to this country. However, the current debate reflects the fact that people have not taken the time to acquaint themselves with how we have arrived at this point in our history. Without this knowledge it is impossible to establish any context for a civil discussion of this issue. We focus here on this concern by providing an overview of the history of immigration into the United States from the mid-1800s to the present time.
