The upcoming presidential election has re-focused national attention on the peculiar system that we use to select our presidents: the electoral college. In this lecture we will examine this unique institution. We will examine its origins at the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and its subsequent evolution. We will inspect the actual constitutional language that governs this process. Finally, we will evaluate the main arguments - both pro and con - about whether this curious institution should be retained.
