« back to classes page
In 1917 while fighting the greatest war in history, the Tsarist government of Nicholas II collapsed into revolution. After six months of confused leadership by a provisional government and a Petersburg Soviet, Russia again fell into revolution. This time the Bolsheviks under Lenin came out in charge which precipitated a bloody civil war ending in a Communist victory in 1922 and the birth of the USSR. This course will review how this all occurred, why things went the way they did, whether other outcomes were possible or desirable, and finally we will try to assess the importance of it all to the modern world.
